Gender equality matters for development

 

According to the latest World Bank World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development, women and girls have experienced real progress on many developmental fronts; however stubborn gender gaps remain.

 

The UIS systematically contributes data on education and literacy to the Word Development Indicators, which were used in the report to analyse persistent disparities in education.

 

Drawing on quantitative and qualitative data, including new field research covering over 4,000 men and women in 19 developing countries, the report focuses on the economics of gender equality. It pays particular attention to the misallocation of women’s skills and labour due to market or social discrimination.

 

The report provides a framework showing how interactions between households, markets and institutions influence gender outcomes. Based on this analysis, the report calls for action in four priority areas to bring about equality and ensure that women’s economic potential can be realized.
