The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today condemned the murder of Iraqi television producer and interpreter Adnan Al Bayati on July 23. Mr Adnan had been working for Italian television stations Rai, Mediaset and TG3, and for the magazine Panorama.

The UNESCO sponsored training course was run by the Phonogrammarchiv of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in cooperation with the Austrian Mediathek.

The Nepalese government and the Communist Party of Nepal, the “Maoists”, should respect press freedom and end all censorship and attacks on journalists immediately, said the representatives of twelve organizations, including UNESCO, who met last week in Nepal with high level government and army officials, civil society representatives and media professionals.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today condemned the murder of Haitian journalist Jacques Roche, whose body was found July 14 in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Mr Roche, cultural editor with the daily Le Matin, was reported kidnapped on July 10.
