“Nomadic Village” presented by the Office of Radio Television of Niger-Télé-Sahel and directed by Mahaman Souleymane was awarded the bronze medal at URTI’s International Grand Prix for Documentaries. An “honest and magnificent film” according to the international jury, the documentary tells the story of a farmer and his small village fighting against the advancing desert.

Lismas Julius is an IT Trainer at the Sengerema Community Multimedia Centre in Tanzania, one of the CMCs supported by UNESCO and giving communities in developing countries access to information and communication services. Like other CMCs, Sengerema combines a community radio station with the infrastructure of a telecentre that offers access to ICTs and short computer training courses to locals.

24-06-2005 (Paris) UNESCO Installs First CMCs in Mali Scale-up Initiative
UNESCO this week installed the first of the new community multimedia centres it is establishing in Mali as part of a scale-up initiative also involving Mozambique and Senegal. The first of the new centres were installed in Niéna and San, respectively 300 and some 400 kilometres east of the capital Bamako. Within the next two weeks, CMCs will also be installed in Goundam, Banamba and Yelimane.

The Koutiala CMC in Mali has its first high speed Internet connection via local wireless loop, allowing it to become a mini Internet service provider for the locality. “We will provide two factories, two local NGOs and a cybercafé with a link”, commented CMC manager Mohamed Sylla, “This will enable us to cover the costs of the connection”.

Twenty-nine documentary collections in 24 countries have been inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. These additions bring to 120 the total number of inscriptions on the Register to date. They include, for the first time, collections from Albania, Azerbaijan, Colombia, Cuba, Italy, Lebanon, Namibia, Portugal, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom and United States of America.

Two community multimedia centres supported by UNESCO in Uganda reaped the rewards of their efforts to impact at the grassroot level earlier this month, when they dominated the UNICEF Children's Broadcasting Day Awards. "This is a milestone for community radio", commented Nabweru CMC manager Edward Juuko as he collected two prizes. The competition, which assessed the best dramatic program and the best participatory programming, attracted entries from a number of both commercial and community radios.

Lumbini Community Multimedia Centre (CMC) has recently organized a one-day orientation programme for blind and visually-impaired students of Shri Shanti Model Secondary School in Manigram, a village in Western Nepal. Shri Shanti local government school has about 850 students twenty-eight of which are either blind or visually impaired.
