LACFREE 2005 opens today in Brazil
The second Latin American and Caribbean conference of free software developers and users (LACFREE 2005) will open this evening at the Pernambuco Convention Centre located between the Brazilian cities of Receife and Olinda.
LACFREE 2005 is organized by the Brazilian Programme SOFTEX, with the support of the municipalities of Recife and Olinda, a world heritage city, and the technical assistance of UNESCO.

The opening ceremony will include the participation of representatives of the Brazilian authorities, local authorities, UNESCO and the professional communities of Latin American and Caribbean countries.

According to the organizers, on Friday, 2 December, almost 3,000 participants were registered to the event that also provides training courses on free software for 1,000 participants in information technology laboratories of the Recife City Hall schools and in the places of the “Open School Project”.

Held for the first time in Cuzco, Peru, in 2003, this second LACFREE conference will address topics such as free and open source software (FOSS) as part of national information society plans, FOSS and perspectives of the development of a national software industry, legal frameworks for software protection and FOSS for participatory e-government.

During the event, the Brazilian Ministry of Planning, represented by Rogerio Santana, Secretary for Logistics and Information Technology will launch a new version of the “Free Guide” (Version 1.0), a document to facilitate the use of free software.
