Online version of UNESCO’s Stand for WSIS launched

UNESCO’s stand, which is inaugurated this week in Tunis at the World Summit on the Information Society, can now be visited online. It showcases many examples of how UNESCO contributes to implement the WSIS Action Plan.
Under the theme “Towards Knowledge Societies”, both the online version of the stand and the exhibition at PalExpo in Tunis provide information on new methods of accessing information and knowledge, for example through community multimedia centres and for people with disabilities. Projects presented also illustrate the use of ICT for equal access to education and highlight innovative ways to foster linguistic and cultural diversity and artistic expression using ICT. One of the four thematic areas of the stand is dedicated to freedom of expression.
In addition, the virtual stand offers information about the Organization's events in Tunis, as well as about the wide range of UNESCO activities, projects, publications and documents related to the Summit.
A webcast of UNESCO events at WSIS will enable visitors to the stand to virtually experience the Tunis Summit.
Welcoming the visitors to the virtual stand, UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura says: “I believe Tunis is a unique opportunity to mobilize partnerships and collaboration that will help to achieve the World Summit’s goals. The UNESCO stand, therefore, is designed to be a space for meeting colleagues and friends and for exchanging ideas and experiences on how to build Knowledge Societies”.
