UNESCO partners with IFJ to develop gender sensitive indicators for media

How can gender balance be measured in media organizations? What is required to improve the path towards fair gender portrayal in the news? UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) will jointly develop indicators for effective evaluation of progress made in this area.
Conscious of the need to mainstream gender issues in the media, UNESCO is supporting and working in partnership with IFJ to implement a project aimed at developing gender sensitive indicators for the media. These indicators will allow for effective monitoring and evaluation of progress that must be made to improve gender balance both in the newsroom and in journalistic practices.
Based on existing initiatives that define gender sensitive indicators, this project will specifically take into account media policy requirements, capacity building for professionals and the role of academic institutions, media owners, governments and civil society.
Participation of key organizations working in the field will ensure that the indicators meet the concerns and cultural differences of media houses and professionals around the world.
Gender equality is one of the global priorities of UNESCO.
