UN warns of escalating tension in eastern Ukraine as casualties hit highest since last August

3 August – Civilian causalities in eastern Ukraine spiked in June and July, prompting the United Nations human rights chief to call on the parties to the conflict to make protection of civilians a priority and take urgent steps to de-escalate the increasingly tense situation at the contact line.


UN and OSCE experts condemn Turkey’s crackdown on media

28 July – Two top media freedom experts of the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) today condemned the ongoing crackdown on journalists and the media by the Government of Turkey in the wake of the recent attempted coup.


Security Council extends UN mission in Cyprus for six months

26 July – The United Nations Security Council today extended the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for six months, until 31 January 2017, and welcomed the progress of the negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to reach a comprehensive settlement.


UNESCO chief condemns killing of journalist in Ukraine

22 July – The head of the United Nations agency tasked with defending press freedom today denounced the killing of award-winning journalist Pavel Sheremet and urged the authorities to bring those responsible for the crime to justice.


Some 1,400 stuck at Hungarian-Serbian border amid dire conditions, UN refugee agency warns

15 July – The United Nations refugee agency today expressed deep concern about a new restrictive law at the Hungarian-Serbian border, and urged Hungarian authorities to investigate reports of abuse and violence in transit zones and bitten by unleashed police dogs.


France: UN condemns terrorist attack on crowds celebrating Bastille Day in Nice

15 July – Senior officials from across the United Nations family today condemned the deadly attack in Nice, France, calling for stepped up efforts to fight terrorism and violent extremism.

3 July – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said he was &#8220deeply saddened” to learn the passing yesterday of Elie Wiesel, 87, a Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and long-standing UN Messenger of Peace.


UN rights expert deplores conviction of tax whistleblowers in LuxLeaks trial

30 June – A United Nations independent human rights expert today deplored the conviction of two whistleblowers who revealed how tax avoidance and tax evasion occurred in Luxembourg banks in the so-called LuxLeaks scandal.
