The new Permanent Observer for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to the United Nations, Marcos Bonturi, presented his letter of appointment to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Bonturi was Director for Global Relations at OECD, where he supported the Secretary-General with strengthening and maintaining relations with Member countries and strategic partners, while engaging and advancing the strategic agenda with non-Member countries.

Having joined the OECD in 1990, he served in various capacities, including Deputy Chief of Staff, Head of Division in the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry, Head of Regional Policy Division in the Public Governance and Territorial Development Directorate, Adviser in the Secretary-General’s Office, and Senior Economist in Chief Economist’s Office.  Prior to joining the organization, from 1987 to 1990, he was at the Inter-American Development Bank, as an economist in the Social and Economic Development Department.

Mr. Bonturi studied engineering at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, holds a master’s degree in economics, and undertook doctoral studies in trade policy and development economics at the University of Maryland.
