A special event was held in the General Assembly Hall on 14 December 2010 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

On 29 June 2010, recognizing the crucial role of the Decolonization Declaration to the expansion of the United Nations membership, the UN General Assembly decided to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of resolution 1514 (XV), which contains the landmark document.
