On-Line Learning has great potential to shape education, but questions remain as to how it will look, how it will be organised and managed, and what impact it will have. These issues will be discussed at an International Conference organized by the Far Eastern College, the Thai National Education Commission (ONEC) and UNESCO in Chiang Mai, Thailand, next January.
UNESCO Upgrades Status of World Association of Newspapers
The World Association of Newspapers has been granted "Associate Relations" status with UNESCO, an official partnership awarded to a limited number of non-governmental organisations with expertise in one of UNESCO's fields of interest. The decision to "upgrade" WAN, which has until now enjoyed consultative status, was taken today by UNESCO's Executive Board.
UNESCO Develops Projects in Framework of Bibliotheca Alexandrina
Today is opening the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the largest library in the Middle East and Africa, marking the rebirth of the institution founded over 2000 years ago. UNESCO’s involvement in the project dates back to 1986, and now the Organization is launching five new projects aimed at promoting the library’s activities.

He was shot near his newspapers’s new offices, currently under construction, on 30 September.
UNESCO Trains Afghan Educators in Computer Skills
Seventy-six teachers and Ministry of Education administrative staff have graduated from a UNESCO implemented computer training programme in Kabul. Using the fully-equipped UNESCO Information and Communication Technologies Access Centre in the Ministry building, the trainees undertook a ten week course in a range of computer applications.

The literary estate of German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1779-1832) is now officially part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. Radio Brings Information to Bamiyan
A small radio station operating from the historical city of Bamiyan in northern Afghanistan is bringing music, news and information to the people of this remote area. "UNESCO will help Bamiyan women to prepare programmes for transmission," says Martin Hadlow of the UNESCO Kabul Office.

A UNESCO supported website to provide information on the Caribbean film and television industry was launched yesterday at a Press Conference in Kingston, Jamaica. This new service at http://www.panmedia.com.jm/cfti is intended to build awareness of the relatively untapped film treasures in the Caribbean.
A WSIS Preparatory Conference in Kyrgysztan

UNESCO/IFIP World Computer Congress Declaration on Youth in Information Society
"Young people are at the forefront of technological innovation and development" declared the participants of the IFIP World Computer Congress (Montreal, Canada, 25-30 August 2002). It is important to "ensure digital inclusion of youth in the field of education, sciences, culture and communication" states the Declaration, a contribution to the World Summit on the Information Society.
