The World Association of Newspapers has been granted "Associate Relations" status with UNESCO, an official partnership awarded to a limited number of non-governmental organisations with expertise in one of UNESCO's fields of interest. UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura today expressed grave concern about news of the murder of yet another journalist, Domingos Savio Brandão Lima Junior, owner, publisher and columnist of the daily Folha do Estado, in Cuiaba, Brazil. He was shot near his newspapers’s new offices, currently under construction, on 30 September.

Seventy-six teachers and Ministry of Education administrative staff have graduated from a UNESCO implemented computer training programme in Kabul. Using the fully-equipped UNESCO Information and Communication Technologies Access Centre in the Ministry building, the trainees undertook a ten week course in a range of computer applications.
