Education Data Release

Education data for the school year ending in 2014 can now be accessed in the UIS Data Centre

This data release includes new and updated data and indicators to support the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 and the Education 2030 agenda.

Readiness to learn

The new education agenda urges countries to do more to prepare children for learning by investing in early childhood education. This is specifically mentioned in SDG Target 4.2: “By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education’’.

Data to monitor this target can be found in the UIS Data Centre under “Participation rate in organised learning one year before the official start of primary school”. Users may also refer to updated participation rates for early childhood education.

The UIS is working with countries and statistical partners to improve the quality of education data and to develop a range of new indicators to monitor SDG 4, including equity and learning, which are new priorities on the education agenda and which will become part of future data releases.

In addition, regional averages and national data are now available for more than 200 countries and territories for all levels of education – from pre-primary to tertiary.

The trend data for population-based regional indicators, such as enrolment rates, have been revised retrospectively as a result of more recent population estimates from the United Nations Population Division.

Users will find indicators on a wide range of policy issues, such as completion of basic education, school resources in Africa, the supply of qualified teachers and the financing of education.

These data can be used to identify the strengths and weaknesses of education systems, especially in developing countries that are struggling to meet the rising demand for education.

The data will be featured in high-profile publications and databases, such as the World Development Indicators (World Bank), the State of the World’s Children (UNICEF), the Global Education Monitoring Report (GEMR), the SDG progress report (United Nations Statistical Division), and many others.

The UIS education database is updated twice each year in November and June. New data on out-of-school-children and youth will be released in July 2016, along with a fact sheet analysing trends.
