What made you decide to study this particular program?
Often sanitation is perceived as a big problem to deal with. I think it is rather the opposite. With growing population and the need to meet growing demands, fecal matter is to be utilized as fertilizer, manure, bio-diesel, bio-plastics, phosphorous recovery etc. Providing better sanitation facilities will not only deliver cleaner environment and improved health benefits, but will also give opportunities to reuse the fecal matter.
Can you say something about studying in Delft/the Netherlands? (Cultural and social experiences)
Delft being a student city gives a lot of exposure and opportunity to interact with students from different countries. It is multi-lingual with a diversified culture. And last but not least it gives you the opportunity to make friends for life!
What kind of professional background do you need to succeed in this program?
More than background what is desired is self motivation to study and manage fecal waste. However, it is perceived that persons with a civil or chemical engineering background will be able to conceptualize programs better.
Why should new students/water professional choose this program?
Growing population exerts pressure on improved sanitation needs. At current level more than half of the world is lacking basic or improved sanitation facilities. To meet the demands and to complete the MDG#7 we need more and more sanitary professionals to address the situation.
Do you have any advice for new students?
Combine creativity with analytic thinking, and zest to search solutions for local problems at global platform and global problems with local innovation.
