Types of work-related issues that can be addressed to an ombudsman


An Ombudsman can informally review an array of issues pertaining to employment at the United Nations. The following list presents the main types of issues that can be addressed to an Ombudsman. It is by no means an inclusive list and staff should feel free to come to the Office of the Ombudsman with any work-related issue that they may have.

Compensation and Benefits

This includes, among other issues, matters relating to salary, pension, leave, health insurance and various other entitlements.

Evaluative Relationship

This includes, among other issues, matters between supervisors and supervisees relating to
interpersonal differences, respect, treatment, communication, team climate and performance management.

Peer and Colleague Relationships

This includes, among other issues, matters between peers relating to interpersonal differences, respect, treatment, communication, team climate.

Job and Career

This includes, among other issues, matters relating to job application and selection processes, career progression and development, terms and conditions of contract, loan, secondment, transfer, rotation, retirement process, separation from service.

Legal, Regulatory, Financial and Compliance

This includes, among other issues, matters relating to harassment, discrimination, waste and abuse of funds, investigative and disciplinary processes, retaliation.

Safety, Health, Wellbeing, Stress and Work/Life

This includes, among other issues, matters relating to working conditions, general wellbeing and stress, accommodation for disability or health conditions and issues with health, safety and security.

Services/Administration

This includes, among other issues, matters relating to responsiveness, timeliness, or administrative actions by sections providing services to staff (HR, pension fund, tax unit, etc…).

Organizational, Leadership and Management

This includes, among other issues, matters relating to organizational climate, morale, culture, communication; change management, issues with leadership in the organization and management styles.

Values, Ethics and Standards

Issues relating to United Nations core values and code of ethics.
