Countries and citizens around the world provide resources to the United Nations, and count on it to work on their behalf for a better and more secure world.
Giving life-saving support to populations hit by humanitarian crises; helping build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas; supporting governments and their citizens to advance development and fight poverty; and promoting human rights worldwide: these are the core pillars of the work of the United Nations and the mandates it receives from its Member States.

The UN provides life-saving assistance to tens of millions of people

- Every year we mobilize about $7 billion in humanitarian aid to help people affected by emergencies.
- Every year we assist over 34 million refugees and others fleeing war, famine and persecution.
- In the last four years we have funded urgent life-saving projects in over 50 countries. Some of the largest recent efforts have been in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, in Pakistan following the 2010 floods, in Myanmar after Cyclone Nargis (2008), and in Bangladesh following Cyclone CIDR (2007).
The UN helps build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas

- The UN has approximately 120,000 peacekeepers from 115 countries deployed in 14 peacekeeping operations on 4 continents. In the last decade it has disarmed hundreds of thousands of ex-combatants.
- We have protected millions of civilians, most recently in Darfur and the Democratic Republic of Congo despite huge challenges.
- We have helped countries stabilize and make difficult political transitions, including in East Timor, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
- Every year the UN helps promote democracy by supporting elections in some 40 countries.
The UN supports governments and their citizens in fighting poverty and achieving their development goals
The UN works closely with local hospitals to improve maternal healthcare in Mongolia.
- In 2011 the UN will provide food to around 90 million people in 73 countries.
- Over the past two years we have mobilized over $60 billion to help governments achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
- The UN promotes maternal health, to protect the lives of 30 million women each year.
- We vaccinate 40% of the world’s children, saving 2 million lives a year.
- We have brokered major global climate change agreements, helped combat deforestation and helped foster renewable energy.
The UN promotes human rights worldwide
- In the past few years, the UN has expanded legal international rights to indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, migrants and their families.
- We are monitoring, reporting on, and fighting against impunity for those who violate international norms and laws.
- We have undertaken impartial inquiries on sensitive matters at the request of Member States - including Cambodia, Niger, Pakistan, Sri Lanka - and in Gaza.
