Preparations for the consultation meetings on the implementation of five Action Lines of the Plan of Action adopted by the World Summit on the Information Society are accelerating with less than three weeks to go before the first meeting at UNESCO’s Paris Headquarters on 16 October 2006.
Assigned as a “provisional focal point” for the implementation of six WSIS action lines, UNESCO organizes five multistakeholder consultation meetings in Paris (16–19 October 2006) and Beijing (22 October 2006) to facilitate the initial contacts and sharing of information among multi stakeholders on their priorities and expertise in the implementation of each of the following Action Lines:

  • 16 October 2006, UNESCO, Paris, France
Consultation meeting on WSIS Action Line C3 ''Access to information and knowledge''

  • 17 October 2006, UNESCO, Paris, France
Consultation meeting on WSIS Action Line C10 ''Ethical dimensions of the Information Society''

  • 18 October 2006, UNESCO, Paris, France
Consultation meeting on WSIS Action Line C7 ''E-learning''

  • 19 October 2006, UNESCO, Paris, France
Consultation meeting on WSIS Action Line C9 ''Media''

  • 22 October 2006, Huarun Hotel, Beijing, China
Consultation meeting on WSIS Action Line C7 ''E-science''

  • The meetings are expected to assist in creating initial contacts and exchanging information among multistakeholders. For each Action Line a team of stakeholders shall be consolidated to assure a smooth implementation and a moderator for each team shall be nominated. UNESCO is hopeful that the meetings will conclude with an agreement on the working methods of the teams including their activities and the expected outcome.

WSIS stakeholders who are interested or involved in the implementation process of the WSIS action lines are invited to participate. They can register online for the event on the UNESCO homepage, where they also find documents related to the meetings.
With the organization of the consultation meetings, UNESCO faces up to a threefold role during the Post-WSIS process. UNESCO implements concrete activities within the framework of its regular programme and budget. Furthermore, it helps facilitating the coherent implementation of the Action Lines in its areas of competence. Together with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO is also engaged in shaping the overall multistakeholders coordination of the facilitators of all Action Lines.

The events stand in a row with the consultation meeting about Cultural diversity and identity, linguistic diversity and local content in Geneva on 12 May 2006.
