Goethe's Literary Papers Officially Included in Memory of the World Register

The literary estate of German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1779-1832) is now officially part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. In a ceremony yesterday at the Residenzschloss in the German town of Weimar, Klaus Hüfner, of the German National Commission of UNESCO, handed over the Memory of the World Certificate to Weimar Classics Foundation President Hellmuth Th. Seemannn.
The literary papers of Goethe, the probably world-wide best known German writer and poet, was included in the Memory of the World Register in 2001 thereby recognizing its world significance. They are deposited at the Weimar Classics Foundation / Goethe and Schiller Archives (GSA) in Weimar.
The major part of the holdings consists of Goethes archives established during the second half of his life reflecting his artistic creation as well as his philosophical and intellectual horizon.. This comprehensive archive left by Goethe is the core of the Goethe and Schiller Archives.
UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, in which the Goethe Papers were included last year; lists documentary heritage that which has been identified by the International Advisory Committee in its meetings in Tashkent (September 1997), in Vienna (June 1999) and in Cheongju City (June 2001) and endorsed by the Director-General of UNESCO as corresponding the selection criteria for world significance.
