UNESCO Provides Pioneering Internet Connection
10-10-2002 ()
One of Afghanistan’s key training institutions for journalists, the AINA Media and Cultural Centre in Kabul, is now able to offer Internet connectivity to its clientele. The Internet link is one of the first available in Kabul and was funded and installed by UNESCO.
“AINA is now able to open a newsroom where Afghan journalists can access information and pictures from the rest of the world,” said AINA Director, Eric Davin. “We expect Internet to play the role of a real booster for Afghan pioneer publications, as well as for individual journalists in opening their minds to international news and sites”.
The connection to the Internet is made via satellite through the Galaxy system. The signal is uplinked from Kabul and is retrieved at a European gateway for onwards passage to an ISP. Charges are levied for the amount of material down-loaded from the network.
The AINA Media and Cultural Centre, which is to be officially opened on the 10th October, will make the Internet connection available to both trainee journalists and those working in newspapers, radio and television. The UNESCO-supplied Internet connection is expected to revolutionize the work of journalists in Kabul who, until now, had neither access to e-mail nor to the cyber information opportunities afforded by the World Wide Web.
