UNESCO and IOF take joint action for Haitian media

On Friday, 3 June 2011, in an endeavour to strengthen Haiti’s media, UNESCO and the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) handed over audiovisual equipment to the National Association of Haitian Media (ANMH), Haiti National Television (TNH), Haiti National Radio (RNH) and the Haitian Ministry of Culture and Communication at the UNESCO Office in Haiti.
The equipment (DV cameras, DVD players and recorders, Flip video cameras, mini digital recorders, CD players, a radio transmitter and computers) will enable Haitian journalists to improve the quality of programmes and reports produced, to the benefit of the general public. It will also boost the audiovisual production capacities of the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
The equipment provision project is part of the two international organizations’ wider effort to support freedom of expression and pluralism in Haiti’s media. Following the earthquake that struck on 12 January 2010, UNESCO supported, in particular, several training courses for Haitian journalists on hazard and disaster management and election reporting. Both organizations intend to pursue their commitment to the media and to journalists, who play a key role in strengthening democracy in Haiti.
