The Illuminated manuscripts from the Ottonian period created in the monastery of Reichenau at Lake Constance in Germany are officially part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Register since last Sunday when Walther Hirsch, President of the German Commission for UNESCO handed over the Memory of the World Certificate.

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura condemned the murder of Dina Mohammed Hassan, a correspondent for Al-Hurriya TV, in Baghdad on Thursday October 14, and of the European Pressphoto Agency photographer Karam Hussein in Mosul on Friday. Mr Matsuura also voiced concern over the intolerable death-toll of media professionals in Iraq.

As Kosovo is heading towards elections end of October, Radio-Television Kosova (RTK), a public broadcasting company, has started broadcasting special election programmes with UNESCO’s support. Nominations are now being accepted for the first-ever UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize for significant contributions to the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage. The Prize of US$30 000 was created to commemorate the inscription of the Buljo jikji simche yojeol, the oldest known book of movable metal print in the world, in the Memory of the World Register.

New units and modules are considerably expanding the Multimedia Training Kit (MMTK) for staff of Community Multimedia Centres. The latest additions to the kit, which is available from UNESCO on CD ROM or can be downloaded from the Internet, have been funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and developed by the Association for Progressive Communication (APC).

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura today condemned the murder in Azua (Dominican Republic) on September 14 of Juan Andújar, a correspondent with the Santo-Domingo-based daily Listín Diario. The journalist was gunned down just after he had completed a radio broadcast on the crime wave that has shaken the town of Azua, in the south of the country.
