Euro-Arab Neighbourhood: Students build Bridges through Media
14-10-2004 (Bonn)
Students from schools in Germany, Jordan, Lebanon and Tunisia presented their Euro-Arab school magazines project last week at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Entitled “Euro-Arab Neighbourhood: Students build Bridges”, the initiative aims at the joint production of school magazines ranging from collectively written articles to complete print and online versions.
The project, that was launched by the German Commission for UNESCO within the framework of the programme “Dialogue with the Islamic World“, was further developed by National Commissions for UNESCO of the European and Arab regions within the context of their strategy “Learning to live together”.
Project activities started in December 2003 during a meeting in Germany when experts from education ministries, public organizations, media publishers and schools from Denmark, Egypt, Germany, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Ukraine established the basis for a school magazine network.
“The reactions of schools and partners show that this project has a great potential for further development of the co-operation between young people from Arab and European countries” says Barbara Malina from the German Commission for UNESCO that leads the project. “We bring interested schools and partners together and give schools assistance to help themselves. All types of schools and young people of any age who are interested in a journalistic co-operation are welcome to take part”.
