The UIS has carried out a regional survey in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries with the objective of collecting a first set of cross-national data on the state and scope of the use of ICT in the education systems. Based on the results of this survey, a publication will be prepared on the use of ICT for educational purposes in primary and secondary schools in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The UIS organised a technical workshop to discuss the results of the data collection in Sao Paulo on 29 and 30 September 2011. The workshop brought together selected statistical officers from 21 countries from the region.
The meeting was supported by the UNESCO office in Brasilia and co-sponsored by the Brazilian Government through the Ministry of Education, and the Brazilian Network Information Center and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (NIC/CGI.br).
The main purposes of the workshop were:
- to contextualise and finalise the draft analytical report on the results of the first LAC regional survey on ICT use in education;
- reflect adjustments required to the UIS regional survey instruments, based on lessons learnt; and
- to examine the statistical implications of the new eLAC2015 policy framework for a second LAC regional survey on ICT use in education.
