In 2015, APCEIU and the IBE carried out a comparative analysis of global citizenship concepts in curriculum guidelines of 10 countries – Colombia, Costa Rica, England, France, Indonesia, Iraq, Kenya, Mongolia, South Korea, and Uganda. The findings of this study will be published this year within the series of

This year, the APCEIU and the IBE have agreed on a three-year project under the theme of: “Global Citizenship Education Curriculum Development and Integration” targeting Cambodia, Colombia, Mongolia and Uganda. The project will imply a series of country activities relating to the situation analysis on GCED, policy-dialogue on mainstreaming GCED in the education system and the curricula, as well as strengthening GCED curricula and teacher training and other necessary supports for GCED implementation.
They now join hands on “Global Citizenship Education Curriculum Development and Integration” within the framework of the 2030 Education Agenda, and in particular relating to Target 4.7. :
“By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development “
The kick-off meeting of the project was opened by Mr. Utak Chung, APCEIU Director. Mr. Chung emphasized the significance of the cooperation between APCEIU and IBE on GCED and emphasized that such a partnership both showcases this concrete ways of cooperation between UNESCO category 1 and 2 Institutes, and highlights the key role the curriculum has in to giving effect to GCED.
The meeting gathered APCEIU staff from the Office of Research and Development – the Head of the Office, Ms. Hyeran Yang, and Assistant Programme Specialist, Ms. Sunmi Ji–, representatives from the country teams – Colombia, Cambodia, Mongolia and Uganda – , UNESCO OREALC/Santiago and the IBE. It was a productive and forward-looking meeting leading to the establishment of a collaboration mechanism for the effective implementation of the project.
During the first year of the project (2016), the IBE will undertake situation analyses in each of the four countries, and will support the organization of capacity-development national workshops and policy dialogue on GCED trends, issues and challenges. APCEIU will be the leading executive entity.
