This special issue on the theme “Overcoming inequalities in teaching and learning” arrives at a pivotal time. Guest edited by Professor Pauline Rose at the University of Cambridge and former director of the Education for All Global Monitoring Report (GMR), the issue draws attention to twin problems that restrain learning and result in wide inequalities: home background and teaching quality.
The United Nations post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), agreed to in September 2015, include education as a key pillar. This special issue aims to contribute to our understanding on how to enhance teaching and learning in ways that improve learning for all children, regardless of their wealth, gender, or where they live.
The articles in this issue are based on background papers and related analysis for the 2013/4 GMR that Pauline Rose directed, on the theme “Teaching and Learning: Achieving Quality Education for All”, which highlighted the fact that a lack of attention to education quality and a failure to reach the marginalized have contributed to a learning crisis that needs urgent attention.
