IGCP and Global Geoparks facilitate international collaboration among geo-scientists, and of local communities, particularly between those from more industrialized and developing countries. Through long-term joint research efforts, meetings, field studies, workshops, IGCP promotes the use of geosciences in global issues including, sustainable development, the health and safety of humanity and the reduction of the adverse effects of natural disasters and resource extraction. Global Geoparks are areas with geodiversity of international significance, used to promote sustainable development of local communities mainly through Geoturism. UNESCO Venice will promote such initiatives in the region.
