World Press Freedom Day 2010

Freedom of Information: the Right to Know

Freedom of Information: the Right to Know at the time of Chile’s Bicentennial (4 May 2010, 9 AM - 1:30 PM; Library of Santiago, Avenida Matucana 151, Santiago, Chile
Under the title of "Freedom of Information: The Right to Know in the Chile of the Bicentennial of Independence", a series of activities will encourage reflection and debate as well as the symbolic commemoration of the date, and gather the forces of various bodies together with the UNESCO's Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean. Partners in this initiative include the Freedom of Expression Programme of the Communications and Image Institute at the University of Chile, UNESCO Chair in mass media and citizen participation at Diego Portales University, the Chilean Journalists Association and The Library of Santiago.

The main event will take place on 4 May in Santiago and will consist of a seminar-workshop designed to stimulate discussion on the matter and put into context the main issues related to freedom of information in the continent. It will be led by a Latin American reporter of international standing.

Afterwards, three workshops will be held, focusing on three central themes, detailed below:

1. Transparency, access to public information and the supervisory role of the press and civil society. Players that have been developing strategies on the use of the access to public information law will share their experiences regarding methodologies, problems, challenges and the possibilities of improving strategies in using this tool.

2. The role of traditional media and social networks in catastrophes. The case of media coverage of the earthquake and tsunami in Chile.

3. The pending debate on public media. The role of public media in a democracy. The TVN and La Nación cases.

Two complementary activities are also being organized under the framework of the Commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2010 in Chile.

On 3 May, a monument paying tribute to Fray Camilo Henríquez will be inaugurated, in a ceremony hosted by the National Council of the College of Journalism.

On 4 May, at 6:00 PM, there will be a formal launch of the book "The Owners of The Word" (Los dueños de la palabra) by Guillermo Mastrini (Universidad de Buenos Aires) and Martín Becerra (Universidad de Quilmes).
