Countries with low adult literacy rates 

 

According to UIS data for reference year 2013, there are 757 million adults who have difficulty in reading and writing -- two-thirds of whom  are women.

 

Adult literacy rates were below 50% in the following 14 countries: Afghanistan, Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Guinea, Haiti, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone and South Sudan.
