Ensuring Equitable Access to ICTs in the Asia-Pacific Region

18-12-2002 ()
One of the basic principles for national ICT policies in the Asia-Pacific region is to create an enabling environment for the development and use of ICTs and to ensure that everyone will have equal opportunities for access to information. This is one of the main conclusions of the participants of the inaugural meeting of the Asia-Pacific Information Network (APIN) that was held last week in Bangkok, Thaïland.
Experts from 18 Asia-Pacific countries (with observers from other countries and international organizations) which gathered in Bangkok also established a roadmap for APIN's future cooperation with UNESCO's "Information for All" programme.

Their Recommendations stress the need to ensure the participation of all stakeholders in drafting and implementing a national ICT policy. UNESCO should play a crucial role in establishing guidelines for developing those policies and for recommending standards for the region.

The Recommendation also underlines the importance of some main requisites for the development of a fair Information Society in Asia, in terms of connectivity, content and information services or ICT literacy.
