International conference in Zagreb to discuss application of UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators

A UNESCO-supported conference, based on a study that has been carried out using UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators, will take place on 25 September 2009 in Zagreb, Croatia, to discuss the state of the Croatian media landscape.
The meeting, organized by the Centre for Media and Communication Research at the University of Zagreb, is the concluding part of a project aimed at establishing a regular monitoring of media development in Croatia. The project constitutes the first comprehensive application of UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators that were adopted in Paris in 2008.
Held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Stjepan Mesić, the conference will bring together a variety of experts from Central and South-East Europe, including academics, media professionals and policy makers. They will be given the opportunity to get acquainted with the indicators and consider their implementation in their respective countries.
The analysis of Croatia’s media landscape covers a wide range of areas including the system of regulation of the media, the degree of plurality and diversity, the role of the media as a platform for democratic discourse, and their professional and infrastructural capacities. The recommendations stemming from the study will enable informed public policies on media development in Croatia.
