The Director-General Meets the President of the Republic of Congo

On 11 March, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, met with the President of the Republic of Congo, His Excellency Denis Sassou Nguesso, in Paris.

This meeting was an opportunity for the Director-General and President Sassou to reaffirm their shared commitment to education and quality training for young people and to highlight the importance of teacher training.

Underlining the progress already achieved by Congo in terms of access to education, President Sassou said that efforts to meet the challenge of enhancing the quality of education should continue and be strengthened. He told the Director-General about the establishment of schools of excellence, designed to accommodate the strongest students and to encourage competitiveness.

For her part, referring to the commitment she made to the President in Brazzaville in October 2012, the Director-General expressed UNESCO’s readiness to support Congo’s efforts in training teachers of primary, secondary and technical education and informed him that the Organization has sent a mission to Brazzaville for this purpose.

They also discussed the situation in Mali and the Sahel and the role of UNESCO in promoting a culture of peace. The Director-General thanked the President for the active participation and contribution of his country to Luanda’s Forum on culture of peace.
