10.09.2013 - UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean

Cameras of Diversity for a Culture of Peace at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival

The eighth edition of the Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival (TTFF) will include in its programme the International Conference "Cameras of Diversity for a Culture of Peace: Thematic debates on the development of the Caribbean film industry", jointly organised by the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, in the framework of the Organisation's general programme for a Culture of Peace, and the TTFF.

The event, to be held in Port of Spain from 25 to 27 September, will contribute to the fulfilment of one of the goals of the Culture of Peace Programme: "to explore opportunities offered by the media, including new social media, as a vehicle for reconciliation, tolerance and intercultural understanding."

The conference will cover eight themes reflecting UNESCO priorities in Education, Culture and Communication and Information, namely: (1) Education, (2) Communication and Archives, (3) Women in Film, (4) Film Criticism, (5) Social Development, (6) Film Industry Development, (7) Legal Frameworks, and (8) Film Exhibition.

The thematic debates will contribute to stress the importance of culture for sustainable development, highlighting the efforts of local, national and international organisations, as well as other institutions, headed by UNESCO, to have culture included as a fundamental element of the Sustainable Development Goals, to be adopted in 2015. Particular attention will be given to the gender approach, from the point of view of gender equality and its perception, as well as to the UN Secretary-General's campaign "UNITE to End Violence against Women".

The Cameras of Diversity is a regional project sponsored by the UNESCO Office in Havana since 2004, which promotes the access and enjoyment, capacity, creation, production, dissemination and distribution of community audiovisuals with a local content in Latin America and the Caribbean. After the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions went into effect, the project is one of the strategic instruments for its dissemination and implementation, as well as for the promotion of linguistic diversity.

The Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival, founded in 2006, is considered one of the main events of its type in the English-speaking Caribbean. As part of the Festival, the best films from the host country, as well as from the Caribbean, the Caribbean Diaspora and the Latin American countries in the Caribbean Basin are screened. The event also seeks to facilitate the growth of the Caribbean film industry through workshops, panel discussions, seminars, conferences and networking opportunities. The 2013 edition will take place between 17 September and 1 October at different venues in Port of Spain, the capital of the host country.
