Description: The peak of the Rock, within the nominated property, looking south towards Africa. In the background, beyond the Strait of Gibraltar, lies Jebel Musa on the North African coast. The Rock and Jebel Musa constituted the Pillars of Hercules in ancient times. The vegetation on the slopes of the Rock, within the buffer zone, includes many species known to have been present at the time of the Neanderthals.
