Media is a powerful tool in promoting peace-building activities by challenging misperceptions and promoting tolerance, collaboration and reconciliation between conflicting parties across all levels of society. Following the collapse of the Former Regime, Iraq has seen the emergence of a vibrant new media community which in recent years has played a highly active role in the conflict. However, many of its media outlets are owned by political parties and have been used as propaganda tools in an attempt to advance the parties' own agendas, whilst other independent outlets have received security threats thus making the aim of impartial journalism very difficult to deliver. Within such a volatile socio-political environment, assistance to local media in capacity building is necessary to ensure a sustainable transition to peace and democracy. Journalists require adequate knowledge of conflict theory and the analytical skills in order to report accurately and impartially on conflict situations. This project aims to enhance the role of Iraqi Media in conflict transformation and reconciliation processes by building capacities of journalists to use conflict sensitive journalism principles based on impartiality, balance and responsibility. Twenty-four journalists from the Iraqi city of Kirkuk, representing different media outlets, will attend two 6-day workshops in conflict sensitive journalism led by an experienced Iraqi media trainer. The immediate objective is to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to maintain professional standards during conflict coverage thus aiding peace-building and reconciliation processes. OBJECTIVE To provide training to 24 Iraqi journalists in conflict sensitive journalism and to enhance their role in the peace-building process by producing conflict sensitive reports
