Countries: Argentina

The relationship between the press and the judiciary in Argentina, as in other countries, is one that has historically been marked by tension. In the majority of cases, this tension leads neither to the bolstering of freedom of the press nor to the strengthening of the judicial system. Given these two entities' centrality in the democratic landscape of Argentina, the ongoing conflicts between them adversely affects not just the institutions, but also the exercise of democracy itself.

This tension stems equally from structural factors as from factors rooted in the poor...

In 2006, the Forum for Argentine Journalism (FOPEA), a nationwide grouping of independent journalists, adopted the country’s first comprehensive ethics code. This is an important step given that journalists in Argentina face constant challenges to the delivery of balanced news reports. However, many FOPEA members have had difficulty understanding how to apply the code. The code will encourage self-regulation, while the advisory...

The AMARC ALC's Púlsar News Agency offers community and independent broadcasters a complete range of information on issues of citizen interest on its web page, three daily e-mails to their 3200 subscribers, coverage and specials campaigns. The setting up of a correspondent net is one of the biggest deficits of the last years. Therefore, this project aims to lead a training process that will allow new community journalists to receive a specific training on Human Rights and journalistic production and join the Púlsar's correspondent net. To that end, we propose to carry out a workshop,...

This project involves two community media dedicated to meeting local community interests: Universal Radio (FM 100.3) which is a community radio station working for 22 years in the city of Buenos Aires, with a coverage of 70 kms; and Universal TV colour is a mixed system of TV integrated by a community antenna and a community TV circuit. It has been functioning there (in the same city) for 15 years. The goal of this project is to promote a participatory approach to programming by involving in productions those segments of the community most open to this type of initiative - schools, social...
