11 February 2016/ UNESCO Havana/Portal of Culture of Latin America and the Caribbean

Since 10 February 2016 the Cuban capital is hosting the workshop for the national team in charge of elaborating in Cuba the Quadrennial Periodic Report on the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

Cuba was one of the first countries to ratify the Convention in 2007. In conformity with Article 9 of the Convention (“Information Sharing and Transparency”), the country presented its first quadrennial periodic report in 2012. The second report is to be submitted to UNESCO on 30 April 2016.

In this context, the Cuban Ministry of Culture (MINCULT), through its Department of International Relations, the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO (CNCU) and the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, based in Havana, organized the workshop, funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

The event was inaugurated by international consultant Leire Fernández, project coordinator at the UNESCO Office in Havana. The workshop sessions began on the tenth, facilitated by international experts of the Secretariat of the 2005 UNESCO Convention Octavio Kulesz and Alfonso Castellanos.

Some 15 specialists from public institutions and civil society, headed by the Ministry of Culture, will receive this capacity-building activity, and later be in charge of elaborating the Periodic Report.
