The UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy of Florianopolis (Brazil) serves delicate fine dining and loving meals to the underprivileged children and teenagers. Aimed to create new opportunities for positive socialization, the ABRASEL (Association Brazilian of Bars and Restaurants) Children’s Week enables young people from low-income families to visit places that are not used to be a part of their daily lives.

 

Thanks for this program, held this year from 5 to 9 October, nearly 2,000 children and teenagers were able to access to a richer socio-cultural life. Through actively participating in a great number of culinary and cultural activities they built self-esteem and self-empowerment, reinforced their cultural and creative capacities and discovered new interests.

 

Several restaurants and malls received groups of children from public schools, day care centers, shelters or orphanages, offering them with a meal and a cultural recreation, including magic and clown shows and selected movies. Moreover, some restaurants opened their kitchen to the children and gave them the opportunity to cook by themselves in a professional environment.

 

The ABRASEL Children’s Week thus contributes to improve access to and participation in cultural life as well as the enjoyment of cultural goods and services, through a partnership involving actors from the public and private sectors and civil society of the city of Florianopolis.
