The first day I saw some drops of blood on my silk white panties I cried. I cried like a baby. I thought I was in trouble. What did I do to deserve this? It was a few weeks after my 11th birthday and exactly one week after I began my secondary education at an all girls boarding school, almost two hours away from home. I stood there over the mystery wondering what to do next until an older student walked in. “Are you ok?” She asked. Her question made me think there was a possibi...

“Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of a farm worker can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another.” This is what the first democratically elected president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, said about educatio...

Imagine for a moment that you are a member of a family that has been uprooted and left to regain footing in a destabilised world. Your entire life as you know it is being undermined by groups whose very existence and potential too were once disregarded. The fact is that people are resentful and conflict is ubiquitous. Maybe you are a 36 year old mother of 6 trapped in your home when those guys that claim to be the “People of Sunnah for Preaching and Jihad”[1] burn your neighb...

I bet that each of us has at least told one lie in his/her lifetime. People do it often. But here’s what I think: I don’t think we lie because we’re “bad”. I think that each lie is in fact a shield, a mask, a disguise, that hides the real person. A person who is too scared to show himself/herself. Now fear isn’t pretty. The Egyptian novelist Mohamed Mansi Qandil says in Moon Over Samarqand: “Do you know what fear is? It kills the best in you. You live your entir...

Who the hell decided which country was which? I don’t mean the names or the flags but the actual territory of each country? How did we come up with the organization of our current nations or who had the power to determine “from here onwards it’s mine, you take the rest”? The berlin conference of 1884-85 is the quintessential example of how unreasonable these boundaries are. Back then, the biggest European countries sat down to discuss the future repartition of the afric...

I read an article on a killing spree that happened on 23rd of July in Munich. It was devastating, regarding with what’s been happening in the world lately (attack on Nice, military coup in Turkey, etc). As I read article per article, I’ve managed to collect enough information to feed my curiosity about the incident, and it leads to this writing. A massacre happened in a shopping center located in Munich, it took a toll of 9 victims – dead - and left more less of 21 people...

The youth is constantly torn between their mind and soul. Between what they should say and what they want to say. Between trying to fit in and escape life. Sometimes it's a paradox. But how can we forget the world? The world always has a say in everything. So, here's a conversation between their mind, their soul and the world. The world: Why are you shaking your leg? Soul: Because I am restless. I don't like settling. I am a wanderer. I want to escape this mundane life....

Marionette Just another doll Hidden behind the curtains Just another puppet Attached to the strings That ripped away its wings Just another face In the system Just another lost soul For them to erase Just another body To contour Just another spirit Gone without a trace. A whole new person For them to make Just another grin for them to fake A few more walls to break Another inner voice for them to awake...
