Capacity Building of Media Professionals in Reporting on Climate Change Issues

Year when project approved:
2011
Approved budget:
US$17 600.00

The media has the potential to raise public awareness on important issues such as climate change. At present however, its capacity is not being fully exercised. This is largely due to a lack of understanding of the subject matter on the part of media professionals, resulting in reports which are laden with technical terms and lacking explanation of how the issue of climate change impacts on people's daily lives. The problem is particularly relevant in Iran, given its hot, dry climate and heavy dependence on the agriculture sector where water is of critical importance. This project therefore aims to help improve the capacity of the Iranian media in an attempt to raise public awareness of climate change-related issues. It will target 100 media professionals from print media, radio and television, and train them over a 12-month period in conducting research, reporting and writing on climate change issues. This will result in the creation of a network of specialized journalists, working in cooperation with a variety of government agencies, NGOs, and other groups to provide increased comprehensive coverage of such issues within the news, as well as providing more credible and accurate information. OBJECTIVE To train 100 Iranian media professionals from a variety of media outlets, in conducting research, and reporting/writing on climate change-related issues, thus establishing a specialist network of journalists and resulting in increased comprehensive coverage of such issues within the news.
