Strengthening the Capacity of Bangladeshi Media in Disaster Reporting

Year when project approved:
2011
Approved budget:
US$16 500.00

The incidence of natural disasters in Bangladesh has risen in recent years, a trend which many attribute to climate change. With this rise we have also seen a change in attitudes relating to disaster management, with the focus turning increasingly towards risk management as opposed to response and relief. Many believe that the media should also adapt its focus to reflect this change by reporting not only during the post-disaster phase, but also before a disaster occurs, in an effort to educate the public about the risks and hazards and to influence policy changes. This project will deliver comprehensive training on reporting climate change, disaster management and risk reduction. It will provide the target group of 60 local correspondents of national media with increased knowledge in this subject area, as well as resulting in the production of 1000 copies of a guidebook on climate change and disaster reporting to act as a reference for journalists across the country in order to improve the amount and quality of coverage relating to natural disaster reporting. OBJECTIVE To deliver comprehensive training in order to build the capacity of local Bangladeshi journalists to report on the issues of climate change, disaster management and risk reduction; and to produce guidebooks on this subject area to act as a future reference.
