Mr. Salifou Imorou, 1956 - 2010

UN Police (Benin)

Salifou Imorou

Salifou Imorou, a national of Benin, was part of the UN Police group working for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) since November 2009.

In Benin, Salifou was a Senior Warrant Officer in the gendarmerie where he had more than 25 years of experience in public security serving in the territorial squads of Aplahoue and Beterou.

In Haiti, Salifou was assigned to the Operations and Monitoring Pillar as a police monitor in the western region of Port-au-Prince.

“Upon his arrival at the Mission in November 2009, Salifou was deployed to the Delmas 33 police station where he immediately demonstrated his capacity to adapt and his endurance at work,” said a colleague who worked with him in Port-au-Prince.

“He also had an easy contact with the other officers of the Haitian police and the rest of the military personnel during joint patrols,” the colleague said.

At the time of the earthquake, there were 31 Beninois police officers working with the UN Police in Haiti.

Benin’s Foreign Minister Jean-Marie Ehouzou held an emotional ceremony to honour the memory of Salifou and the two other Beninois police officers who also perished in the earthquake. After observing a minute of silence he presented his condolences, along with the condolences of the President and the Government of Benin, to the family members in attendance.

Salifou is survived by his son Abdel Tarick.
