Security Guard (Haiti)
Marie Renée Joseph, a national of Haiti, was a Security Guard for the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) since August 2005.
Marie Renée, nicknamed “Ginou,” lived with her parents and brothers and sisters in Haiti. She attended the Lycée Pinchinat in Jacmel, before pursuing her studies at the Institut Universitaire Quisqueya-Amérique and later at the Faculté des Sciences Humaines in Port-au-Prince.
Immediately prior to working for the UN, Marie Renée worked at the Office d’Assurance Accidents du Travail et Maternité in Jacmel, where she dealt with office accounts and administration.
In her spare time she worked as a peer educator for Volontariat pour le Développement d’Haïti, a nongovernmental organization where young Haitian people are given the opportunity to grow to become responsible adults through personal development, training and peer activities.
Marie Renée often took continuing education and training courses associated with MINUSTAH and she also obtained certificates in journalism and commercial law.
A colleague recalled that upon joining MINUSTAH, Marie Renée immediately became a friend to all who knew her. “Her humour was infectious, she always found the right comforting word,” she said. “She was one of those people whom you always wanted around.”
Marie Renée’s mother tongue was Creole, but she was also fluent in French and understood both English and Spanish.
Marie Renée is survived by her parents and her brothers and sisters.
