Breakfast session on Water and Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in Megacities

UNESCO and the Secretariat of Habitat III are organizing an “urban breakfast” session on Water and Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in Megacities ahead of the United Nations conference on habitat and sustainable development (UN-Habitat III, October 2016). The breakfast will take place at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris on 15 June from 8 to 9 a.m.

The session will focus on how major urban centres can use their financial and technological resources to meet the challenge of rising water demand, declining resources and pollution.

Flavia Schlegel, Assistant UNESCO Director-General for Science, will be among the speakers at the breakfast alongside Galo Mora Witt, Ecuador’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Celia Blauel, Deputy Mayor of Paris in charge of Water and Sustainable Development, Tobias Kettner, Habitat III Europe Representative, and Maryke van Staden, ICLEI, Director of the Carbon Center of the Local Governments for Sustainability network (ICLEI). Blanca Jimenez-Cisneros, Director of UNESCO’s Division of Water Sciences, will moderate the session.

The urban breakfast, the first to be held in Paris, is part of a series of session organized in New York and Brussels to prepare the Habitat III conference. Each session is dedicated to one of the UN conference’s central issues.

It is organized as a side event to the 22nd session of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) of UNESCO, which will take place from 13 to 17 June.
