Capacity Building of Radio Journalists Working on Gender Violence

Year when project approved:
2011
Approved budget:
US$20 900.00

Violence against women in Mexico is widespread and often goes unpunished. In recent years there have been several cases of threats and attacks on media workers who have dared to report on such matters, making it highly challenging for communication media to exercise their fundamental right to freedom of expression. Community radios have the proven potential to give a voice to vulnerable and marginalized groups such as women and indigenous people, however at present, the majority of community radio staff in Mexico lack professional journalist training and expertise in human rights. This project aims to address this problem by organizing a series of workshops for a group of 40 community radio journalists from trainers specialized in human rights, non-sexist language and gender violence, with a view to enabling journalists to communicate and interact with communities and each other on gender-related issues, thus increasing media coverage and raising public awareness as a consequence. The project will also create a strategic alliance among radio journalists within indigenous Mexican communities to support research on gender violence and build upon the work which has already been initiated in this area. OBJECTIVE To organize a series of workshops for 40 community radio journalists, covering gender-related issues in order to incorporate gender sensitivity into community radio programmes and increase the media coverage of issues related to gender violence and discrimination.
