CBA: Media Supporting Democracy Workshop for Caribbean Broadcasters

Year when project approved:
2011
Approved budget:
US$22 000.00

The media plays a key role in any successfully functioning democracy by providing a platform for democratic discourse. Recently however, the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) has become concerned that media outlets in the Caribbean are facing increased pressure from government and judiciary sources to alter the content being broadcast, thus presenting a threat to democracy. This project aims to address this issue by providing training to journalists and producers, and to broaden the coverage of election issues throughout the Caribbean in order to better equip the media in supporting democracy. A group of 24 (mainly women) broadcast journalists and producers from Caribbean TV and radio stations will be selected from posts which have the potential to produce or influence broadcast coverage, particularly of elections. These individuals will attend a 2-day training workshop to provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to report fairly on elections, as well as taking part in an online distance-learning course on Election Reporting. An online forum will be set up and maintained by the CBA to ensure continued discussion of the topics covered during the training, and to record any changes to policy. A booklet will also be produced and distributed to media professionals providing background information into the media's role in supporting democracy. OBJECTIVE: To provide in-person and online training to 24 Caribbean media professionals on election reporting and the role of the media in supporting democracy, and to set up an online forum for continued discussion of such issues.
