Spreading and Discussing Results of the Media Development Indicator Study in Uruguay
Following the return to democracy in Uruguay, much progress has been made towards the diversification of information sources and development of community media, as well as in the introduction of legal regulation of the media system. There remains work to be done however, particularly in the use of media as a platform for democratic discourse and with regard to media access for certain sectors of society. In July 2010, the communication schools and faculties of all public and private universities in Uruguay began the process of designing and implementing the first national study on media development, based on UNESCO's Media Development Indicators (MDIs). The findings of the study (which is being conducted between November 2010 and September 2011), will become indispensable in the design of future media development strategies. This project will involve two 2-day seminars and a series of workshops led by national and international experts, in order to discuss the results of the MDI study and provide training in ways to foster media development. The attendees of these seminars and training workshops will be 100 media owners, chief-editors, programming managers and other decision makers in Uruguayan public, private and community media. Based on the results of the seminars, a monitoring and reward system will be designed and implemented to allow continuous measurement and contribute to media development in the long term. OBJECTIVE To conduct two 2-day seminars and a series of workshops for a target group of media professionals in order to discuss the results of the national MDI study and provide training in ways to foster media development. A monitoring and reward system will also be designed involving key stakeholders, and launched to ensure continuous measurement and sustainable development.
