Training on Multimedia Reporting for Mexican and Central American Journalists (IAPA)

Year when project approved:
2011
Approved budget:
US$17 600.00

Due to its potential to offer integrated reporting formats, Latin American news readers are increasingly turning towards the internet as the news outlet of choice. This has led to the emergence of new actors within the field of journalism, with rapid growth particularly in community news websites, citizen journalism and blogging. This project focuses on the teaching of basic multimedia reporting skills (photo and audio for the web) and storytelling, to journalists from Mexico and Central America, and to citizens with an interest in developing multimedia news content aimed at covering their communities. Training will be conducted as a series of 2-day seminars, led by the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and its Press Institute, who have identified an urgent need for training in multimedia reporting in the region in recent years. Day one of each seminar will consist of multimedia training, including sessions on photography, the basic principles of audio, equipment and software recommendations. Day two will consist of training sessions on safety issues, including risk assessment and management, and recommendations and strategies for planning coverage. The participants will be invited to launch a new network, based on an extension of the Geografia de Riesgos (risk-mapping) project developed by IAPA to investigate crimes and attacks against the press. Successful implementation of the project will produce over 150 Mexican and Central American journalists capable of creating their own multimedia content through use of online resources and low-cost or free software tools and equipment. In being open to both professionals and non-professionals, the training will also help promote the development of independent content producers, thus contributing to plurality and freedom of expression, both of which are crucial to democracy. OBJECTIVE To provide training seminars to over 150 Mexican and Central American journalists in order to equip them with the necessary skills to produce multimedia content on the web, and to contribute towards their safety by providing training on risk assessment and management.
