National Training Programme for Journalists and Professors on Investigative Journalism Based on Public Data

Year when project approved:
2011
Approved budget:
US$35 200.00

In recent years, Brazil has made major steps in promoting freedom of information in an effort to eliminate corruption. This was illustrated by the creation of a freedom of information law and also by the approval of a transparency law last year, which requires the publishing of all financial operations on a municipal, state and federal level. Encouraging civil society participation on the surveillance of public expenditures is crucial in avoiding corruption, and the press has the potential to occupy a major role in this endeavour, but only when journalists are capable of correctly evaluating public strategies. This project will deliver in-person and online training to at least 200 professors and journalists to equip them with the necessary skills to search for public information and produce investigative articles. An online platform will also be created to allow the permanent sharing of knowledge and public information. The course content will then be replicated and delivered within Brazilian universities and newsrooms thus increasing citizen control over federal and local governments and enhancing the democratic process through stories of public interest. OBJECTIVE To train at least 200 professors and journalists in the necessary skills to search for public information and produce investigative articles; and to create an online platform to promote the sharing of such information.
