Training Workshop on Raising Gender Awareness through Media

Year when project approved:
2011
Approved budget:
US$19 800.00

The media's handling of gender issues has an enormous effect on people's understanding and support of gender equality. It is therefore of paramount importance to equip media professionals with adequate knowledge and skills to address gender issues in all communication processes, and to report news in an objective and gender-sensitive manner. This project aims to provide training on such issues to journalists and media professionals from the Dominican Republic in order to promote a genuine and faire image of Dominican women by increasing gender perspectives in the media and strengthening its capacity to avoid stereotypes, thus contributing to the overall goal of gender equality. The target group will include both men and women representing various types of media, selected from across the country. It will also include teachers who can later replicate and transmit the skills and knowledge they acquire during the organized workshops. A multimedia storage device with workshop contents will also be produced to further ensure the project's sustainability. The result will be higher quality gender-sensitive news and information distributed through Dominican media. OBJECTIVE To train 35 journalists and media professionals (including media trainers) on gender-sensitive reporting in order to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to promote gender equality through media.
