In a country that is highly dangerous for journalists, Internet has come to represent a safe space for journalism. However, a forthcoming law on blocking and removing content from the Internet poses a threat to freedom of expression, access to information and privacy. This project therefore seeks to formulate a safety manual to help media professionals better protect their rights and personal safety when using ICTs and the Internet. This guide will include the recommendations and implementation strategy of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity...

Colombia is a country that has had almost 60 years of internal armed conflict, as a result of inequalities, exclusion of broad strata of the population and weakness of the State. The country has been controlled by powerful groups (such as private corporations, national elites, wealthy families, etc.), which has resulted in widespread violence with many expressions and multiple stakeholders. This has negatively affected the economy and the country’s development, causing high rates of poverty and inequality. The nation spends heavily on security and defense, to the detriment of funding for...

Drug trafficking has become one of the main causes of problems relating to security, violence, corruption and weakening of democracy in the countries of Latin America. Fear of reporting on the topic continues to spread among journalists however, with increasingly fewer reporters venturing to cover drug trafficking and organized crime issues because they fear for their lives.

This project therefore is aimed at providing journalists who cover drug trafficking and organized crime, working along Colombia’s border zones, with training on self-protection mechanisms, complemented by...

In the Latin American region, an urgent need has been identified to provide training for professors in key areas of journalism, proposing four subjects from the UNESCO Model Curriculum:  Foundations of journalism, Multimedia journalism, Media legislation and Journalism ethics. Despite large numbers of women occupying positions in the Colombian media today, the gender divide is ever-present with female media professionals regularly subject to discrimination. At fault is a lack of interest concerning gender issues combined with a lack of organized training. For these reasons, the Colombian Federation of Journalists created FECOLPER Women's Network, an internet network created specifically for the exchange of information about gender and freedom of the press. This project aims to strengthen the institutional capacity of FECOLPER by applying UNESCO's Guidelines on...

In Colombia, investigative journalism faces many obstacles, such as violence in small cities, routine danger and threats to journalists, economically entrenched interests of communication media, the control of some politicians over journalists and media outlets, and the lack of knowledge about technologies and investigative techniques by journalists. Despite these difficulties, many journalists in Bogotá and Colombian regions have produced great investigative works on diverse topics such as political, environmental and social matters. However, very few journalists use information and...

In recent years the media's information agenda across Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador has been dedicated in large part to the different declarations from their respective leaders, much of it revolving around a border crisis caused by a series of events related to the Colombian armed conflict and security policy extant media scene is characterized by a polarization and politicization of information that many times works against the function of the media as an instrument for democracy and peace. Due to the tensions between national neighbors, it is important to foster actions that will help...

This project is to be implemented in two regions afflicted by a high rate of armed conflict (Eastern Antioquía and Caquetá); this makes them a stake in communication for tolerance and reconciliation. Another point is the need to create and develop free and responsible journalism, and to improve the training of regional and local journalists on the matters of violence. Citizen radios have been installed in areas selected so as to amplify local and regional public audience. Thanks to community radios, there is now a greater recognition of public issues, and public debate has been promoted....
