Building capacity of journalists for the promotion of pluralism in Nepal
There have been many recent cases of the Nepalese media failing to comply with norms of pluralism and gender equality. As a result, Nepal’s marginalized groups (namely women and ethnic/religious minorities) lack trust in the media and often feel their issues are not dealt with fairly. This project will therefore train journalists to promote gender equality and pluralism in the Nepali media so that they can provide balanced coverage on issues regarding marginalized and excluded communities. This project will contribute to a more objective, free, pluralistic and progressive media that will contribute towards a vibrant, inclusive and democratic Nepal.
A training manual on Social Diversity and Gender Equality in media was published and distributed among the training participants as well as other concern stakeholders. A total of 100 journalists in five districts of the five development region trained on issues concerning media pluralism, diversity and gender equality. As a result, their knowledge on issues concerning media pluralism, diversity and gender equality was enhanced. Ten fellowships for working journalists (including 5 women) were given to report diverse issues through their media, which resulted in them reporting investigative news on the different issues such as rights of marginalized communities and discrimination towards Muslim women. The trained journalists reported that this news were a useful reference for advocacy groups to advocate the rights of marginalized communities and women and girls. Five district-level and one national-level consultation meeting among the media managers and editors were organized, which sensitized them to issues of social diversity and gender equality.
