Media, Transparency and Governance. Workshop in Marshall Islands

16-02-2005 (New Delhi)
Media, Transparency and Governance. Workshop in Marshall Islands
V7AB News Editor Lisa Lajwi and
trainer Peter May examine a news item.
Staff members of the government radio station V7AB in the Marshall Islands recently completed a two week workshop entitled ‘Getting the Message Across - Transparency and Governance in the Marshall Islands’ sponsored by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).
While the focus has been primarily on honing the professional skills of communicators to enhance their ability to communicate ideas to the public, there have also been wide-ranging discussions about governance, transparency, and the media, especially as they relate to the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI).

V7AB is the only radio station in the country, which reaches all of the population of the Marshall Islands, even to the remotest outer atolls where radio is the only modern media available.

While the staff have worked on improving their skills and ways of carrying the message to their listeners, they have also discussed in detail issues relating to transparency and governance in the RMI, and the role a government-operated radio station plays, the benefits, responsibilities, and drawbacks of being the official voice of the nation.

As the first phase of ‘Getting the Message Across - Transparency and Governance in the Marshall Islands’ draws near a close, there has been examination of an existing and yet-to-be adopted draft policy for the national broadcaster and it’s relationship to modern understanding of media freedom and communication.

The draft policy will be considered by workshop trainer Peter May before returning the to Marshall Islands with phase two of the programme, designed to focus on public affairs broadcasts produced by a number of government departments. When it is returned to the Marshall Islands, it is hoped the draft policy will be finalized and put before Cabinet for consideration and adoption as the official policy of the government broadcaster.
